CT Nighthawks Billet Program

Each September 50 highly talented and highly motivated hockey players report to Simsbury, Connecticut to pursue their hockey dreams, with The Connecticut Nighthawks. These players travel from all over the world, and count on local families to share their homes, and act as the player’s host family. The relationship between a player and his billet family often lasts a lifetime and the importance of finding these “Billet Families,” cannot be overstated.

The Nighthawks play in the USPHL, the premier Tier 3 junior hockey league in the country.  Nighthawks' players will arrive in Connecticut the week before Labor Day and the season ends no later than mid-March.  The idea of the billet program is for families to enjoy being part of an athlete's dream while adding a son, grandson, or "Big Brother" to their household.

Players are responsible for paying their billet families $500 per month and the Nighthawks organization will check-in with billet families often to ensure that all house rules are being followed and that the athletes are adhering to all house rules.

Host Families Responsibilities:

  1. Bedroom or shared bedroom with another billeted player
  2. Room should have a bed and reasonable closet space
  3. Making healthy meals or allowing the player to make his own meals
  4. Internet access and access to washer and dryer, etc.
  5. Setting and being clear about house rules
  6. Communicating with the Nighthawks when/if issues arise

Players:

  1. Players must follow all host family rules. Players that do not abide by host family rules will be subject to dismissal from the Nighthawks organization.
  2. Supply their personal bedding and bath products, cell phones, computer.
  3. Athlete must keep their room clean and are responsible for doing their own laundry.
  4. Players must keep host family informed of their whereabouts. Players should be home at a reasonable time and should only sleep elsewhere during team travel and vacations.
  5. Player transportation to and from practices and home games is the responsibility of the player.
  6. Players will take classes online or will work part-time jobs during the down time and are expected to keep themselves busy.
  7. Players will make a monthly payment of $500, which is to be paid on the first of each month, or otherwise arranged by the billet family.

Billeting will be a very rewarding experience for the host family.  Families often create long lasting relationships and keep in touch with their billeted player long after the season ends.

FAQ

1. Who fits the profile of a great billet?
Although great billet families do not fit a specific profile, empty nesters and families with young children seem to be great fits for these athletes. Players have proven to be great role models for younger children and teenagers and can be great companions for empty nesters.

2.  Can we host more than one player?
Absolutely. We have several players that need housing and it is great for the players to be able to share transportation duties. Players may be put together in a bedroom and double billet fees may be collected.

3.  What do we do with players during the holidays?
The Nighthawks’ schedule is holiday friendly. Players go on break for Thanksgiving and Christmas and will return home during these breaks. Billet families have no responsibilities during this time.

4.  What is compensation to the host family?
Host families receive $500, monthly, per player. Fees should be paid on the first of each month.

5.  Do these athletes have health insurance? Who is responsible in case of an injury?
All Nighthawk players will have medical insurance of their own. Host families are never responsible for a player’s medical care.

6.  How busy will my billeted player be, during the season?

Nighthawk players will be taking part in team activities for a large part of the day and are responsible for keeping themselves busy with school and/or part time work.

Stover Scholarship Applications Being Accepted

SYHA Families:

In October 2003, James A. Stover, an SYHA skater, passed away tragically in a sudden accident while playing on a beach at Block Island.  He was seven years old.  Among James's many passions was hockey, and his zest for life and happy attitude were always with him on the ice.

To honor his spirit, the Simsbury Youth Hockey Association created a scholarship fund to enable any player to participate in the SYHA program, regardless of financial ability.  Many parents and players have generously donated to this fund and SYHA raises funds throughout the year to enable as many players a possible to benefit from this generosity.  We are also pleased to announce that the proceeds from our 2017 Winter Classic event contributed over $3,000 to this great cause.

In order to qualify, a family needs only to print and complete the application form attached below and include a copy of their previous year's IRS Form 1040.

James A. Stover Scholarship Application

The application is reviewed - in strictest confidentiality - by a three member sub-panel of the SYHA Board of Directors consisting of the President, Vice President of Operations and Treasurer.  Scholarships are awarded strictly based on financial need.  Applications for the 2018-19 season should be submitted no later than Wednesday August 1st.
